About
The Appenzeller Spitzhauben (not an APA recognized breed). Commonly known simply as Spitzhaubens, this breed lays a white shelled egg and has white skin. This breed has just recently begun to have a more serious interest in their breeding and preservation. Spitzhauben’s produce 150-180 of medium-to-large-sized white eggs each year. A single hen can produce anywhere from 3-5 eggs in one week. Appenzeller Spitzhauben hens rarely go broody. They lay almost all year, and can continue to lay in the winter, unlike many other breeds. Although they don’t produce as much eggs as other breeds, they have a striking appearance as a ornamental bird.

Spitzhauben are considered cold hardy and are able to handle warmer temperatures as well. They are excellent foragers and free range well, because they stay alert to danger and can move quickly.

Appenzeller Spitzhauben roosters are certainly not known to be especially aggressive. In fact, many chicken keepers say their Appenzeller roosters are unusually friendly. I find ours to be inquisitive, curious, docile and friendly. Roosters are 4.5 pounds and hens 3.5 lbs, they are not particulary big birds, but they do require alot of space and do not like confinement. If you do not have the space or desire to free-range your chickens, Spitzhauben’s are not the breed for you. They will go stir crazy and this is not fair to them. Inside the coop, provide 3-4 square feet per chicken to make sure everyone has adequate spacing for nighttime and rainy days
