Free ranging is when the chickens walk freely within an area. They are not confined in one container. These chickens are not caged, have access to roam in well-fenced areas outside. They return to their secured coop before nightfall for safety.
Chickens are happiest when they have a safe area to roam, scratch and dustbathe during the day. This area should be predator proof, you don’t want your flock harmed or frightened by other animals. Some people let chickens roam their property as the don’t usually take off, but you are assuming the risk that some may be taken by predators at some point.

Benefits to free ranging chickens
- Greater amount of exercise
- More protein in their diet from bugs
- Access to fresh air and sunshine
- Overall greater happiness of the flock
- Less risk for disease, injury or ilness from being confined to a small crowded area
- Makes their muscles stronger from using them more
- There is less boredum, so there will be less stress and less fighting amount the flock
There is cons to free ranging as well, such as:
Cons
- Manure is everywhere.
- There is an increased need for antibiotics.
- The chickens can scratch up your grass for dust baths.
- They need shelter to protect themselves from predators.
- Free-ranging birds have the tendency to hide their eggs.
The benefits outweigh the risks, of course

Another positive to free ranging chickens: Free-range eggs are often considered to have a richer and more flavorful taste compared to eggs from caged hens. This is primarily because free-range hens have access to a varied diet, including grass, insects, and other natural food sources, which can enhance the flavor of their eggs.
