A lot of people ask this question. What’s the difference between farm fresh eggs versus going to the grocery store?
The yolks will have different colours based on what the chickens were being fed in their diet. When you crack open a fresh egg and then crack open a store egg side by side, you’ll see a big difference in what the chickens nutritional experience was. I notice that our fresh eggs have a darker yellow yolk, and the store bought eggs have a yellow colour that ranges in bright to pale depending on which store you bought it from. Besides the colour, you can taste the difference in quality.

Here are some of the nutritional differences that farm fresh eggs have
- Less saturated fat
- increased vitamins A, E and D
- more omega-3 fatty acids
- more beta carotene
We feed our chickens lots of healthy table scraps as well, so I am sure there would also be additional vitamins in our eggs

If you are one of those people that are going to the store and spending $7.00 to $8.00 everytime to try to find the closest to free-range eggs as you can find, you may be better off raising chickens for yourself. It does cost money to start up, but there is cheaper ways to get started with raising chickens, you can gradually work your way up towards a bigger coop or a nicer coop if that’s something you decide on. We made the decision to have chickens as we want to be more self-sufficient. We like knowing where our food is coming from, it’s peace of mind knowing we are eating something healthy everyday.
